« Tests, Essais + Expérimentations » is the topic of this year’s Orphan Symposium, hosted by the Cinémathèque française and the New York University. It will take place from 2-4 March during the film festival « Toute la Mémoire du Monde » (1-5 March 2017) at the Cinémathèque française.
The Orphan Symposium lays the focus on the margins: amateur and home movies, experimental artists, medical attractions, rushes from master pieces, outtakes and leftovers from newsreels and documentaries. Scholars, researchers and curators from European and International film archives will discuss how to preserve, present and research these large but often hidden collections. How to situate tests and experimentation in the histories of cinema and visual culture?
On Saturday, 4 March, Thomas Christensen (Danish Film Institute) will present the results of the FORWARD project. FORWARD has built a tool that supports film archives in assessing the rights status of films and identifying orphan works.
